Three leading experts in the field of light elucidate decades of research, which has instigated global change in the understanding and use of light in design.
Philips Lighting, parent company to this site's sponsor Philips Lumileds, is undertaking an educational outreach called Philips Lighting University. It kicked off last fall with the first in a series of Luminous Talks at Parsons the New School for Design in New York.
The series continues next week and in May and June with online webinars featuring world-renowned experts in the study of how light affects health and well-being. Learning about the psychology and physiology of light from Craig Bernecker, Russell Foster, and Serge Daan represents a "once in a lifetime opportunity," according to Philips Lighting's Matthew Cobham.
On April 17, the series kicks off with Dr. Craig Bernecker, professor in the Masters of Fine Arts in Lighting Design program at Parsons the News School For Design. Dr. Berneker's research into people's perception of lighting has, since the 1990s, influenced the design of uplighters everywhere. His early computer simulations of lighting effects influenced the adoption of simulation as a standard practice across the industry.
Future programs in this series include Professor Russell Foster of the University of Oxford speaking on circadian neuroscience, on May 30, and in June Dr. Serge Daan will share his knowledge of chronobiology. Dr. Daan is one of the leading experts in minimizing the effect of jet lag through controlled lighting.
Here's a link to register for the April 17 webinar. See you there?
